Benefits of Mindfulness Meditation

Mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) is considered the gold standard in modern mindfulness training and is also the most widely studied mindfulness intervention program. Studies suggest that the practice of MBSR offers physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual benefits:

PHYSICAL

MBSR can help to manage chronic pain, fibromyalgia, and heart disease. It can reduce high blood pressure, manage gastrointestinal (GI) and skin disorders and support immune system function.

MENTAL

MBSR is associated with improved brain function (learning, memory, focus and attention, and increasing cognitive flexibility), supporting neuroplasticity, and reducing amygdala reactivity to stress.

EMOTIONAL

Reducing anxiety, depression and rumination. MBSR can lead to increased emotional self-regulation (less reactivity) and resilience, as well as improved ability to cope effectively with short- and long-term stress. It can also create a sense of calm and increase well-being.

SPIRITUAL

Mindfulness practitioners have reported increased intuition, insight, wisdom and creativity as well as a clearer sense of purpose and meaning.

Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn, founder of mindfulness-based stress reduction, answers the question, “What is mindfulness?”

“Mindfulness can free the mind from destructive thought patterns that can lead to anxiety, depression and burnout and enable more skillful and creative responses to life’s challenges.”

“ABC News anchor Dan Harris used to think that meditation “was for people who collect crystals, play ultimate frisbee, and use the word namaste without irony.” Harris discovered that meditation has made him more focused and productive, less emotionally reactive, more patient, and generally easier to be around.”
